Associate Professor Dr. Hsi-Chin Wu from the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering has been awarded the 2023 Teaching Excellence Award by the Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET). Professor Wu expresses gratitude for the support and assistance from the school and colleagues, and appreciates the opportunity to "realize self-fulfillment together with the students" on the journey of teaching and learning.
Professor Wu specializes in biomedical materials, nanobiotechnology, and tissue engineering. She teaches courses such as "Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine," "Exploring the Wonderful Materials in the Artificial World," and "Discussions on Authentic Materials in Life." With great enthusiasm and dedication, she independently plans and continuously refines teaching materials, teaching methods, and instructional activity designs. Through a student-centered approach, the focus shifts from teacher-centered lecturing to interactive and two-way learning.
Utilizing digital e-learning platform, students are encouraged to preview and review course content. The combination of in-person interactive teaching, which emphasizes diverse interactions among teachers and students, as well as student-to-student interactions, sparks students' intrinsic motivation, guides their learning process, improves learning outcomes, and cultivates their ability for active learning, interdisciplinary exploration, and problem-solving. Teaching strategies include lectures by teachers, industry professionals sharing their expertise, hands-on activities, and field visits to companies, which help students accumulate learning experiences and develop their own learning strategies.
Professor Wu has been recognized as an Excellent Teacher (Innovative Teaching Category) at Tatung University in 2013, 2018, and 2020. She has also conducted teaching practice research projects funded by the Ministry of Education in 2017 and 2018. Her research project was selected as an Outstanding Project in the "Ministry of Education Teaching Practice Research Project" in 2019. In addition to traditional lecturing, her teaching approach emphasizes participatory learning, guiding students in hands-on activities, discussions, and completion of course projects. She is the first faculty member at Tatung University to be selected for an outstanding teaching practice research project.
Professor Wu once said, "Everything we see with our eyes is related to materials. Materials are the magic that makes the world shine and constantly transform." She hopes to lead students in exploring the world of materials engineering and experiencing the joy of learning through various possible approaches.
