There have been reports of serious injuries caused by opening car doors without noticing incoming vehicles from behind. To address this issue, Huang, Wei-Siang, a junior student majoring in Industrial Design, designed a "Lights on, someone's around" warning icon that can be seen from a distance by motorcycle and bicycle riders. By seeing the warning, they can maintain distance or slow down and reduce the risk of accidents caused by improper door opening. Huang's design won the "Transportation Accessories - Gold Award" at the 2022 International Design Awards (IDA) in the United States.

      "I've seen many videos of motorcycles hitting car doors, and it's terrifying!" said Huang. His design involves pressing a device before opening the car door, which causes the rear windshield to display an icon of a car door opening to indicate that someone is about to get out of the car. After the person gets out and closes the door, the icon disappears. This small action takes only two to three seconds and enhances the safety of drivers and riders."

      Huang said that he is always cautious when riding a bicycle and opening the car door, but blind spots are hard to avoid. The warning features he designed use existing technology, so they are not difficult to implement. Even with the warning icon, drivers still need to pay attention to safety when getting out of the car to avoid accidents.

      Huang, Wei-Siang is currently participating in an exchange program at Fontys University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, majoring in graphic design. He is expected to return to Taiwan in July. During the exchange, he actively participates in international design competitions to improve his communication and expression skills. "Design is often about the first impression, which is based on exhibition boards and images. I need to keep practicing how to accurately express my ideas and design concepts," Huang explained.
