With the support of Tatung University, alumni who are accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) can receive priority consideration for the T.S. Lin Fellowship, which provides $90,000 USD (approximately 2.7 million NTD).
The nine-month fellowship covers tuition, health insurance, and a stipend. According to the official website, graduate students from Tatung University and a student from the Republic of China recommended by Tatung University are given priority. Yao, Yong-wen, director of the Office of International Affairs, explained that Tatung University selects two outstanding alumni, to provide more support for alumni who want to pursue further studies or those who want to continue their education after entering the workforce.
The T.S. Lin Fellowship was established by the first president of Tatung University, Lin, Tin-Shin. At that time, there was a considerable gap between the national income in Taiwan and that of the United States, and studying in the U.S. was a financial burden. This fellowship was created to help Tatung alumni study at MIT without being constrained by financial difficulties. At that time, Tatung alumni studying at MIT could receive financial assistance if recommended by the university. The fellowship has since expanded to include Chinese students and has been uninterrupted for many years.
Founded in 1861, MIT is one of the most prestigious universities in the world and has produced 97 Nobel laureates as of 2021. In the 2023 QS World University Rankings, MIT ranked first globally.
