Mastering one foreign language is a basic skill, and being proficient in two foreign languages makes one more competitive. Adding interdisciplinary expertise can make one stand out from the crowd. Therefore, students in Applied Foreign Languages should study both English and Japanese, and plan their course modules and interdisciplinary programs, choosing from language teaching, business, translation, and interdisciplinary studies. By introducing courses such as "Introduction to Semiconductor and Green Energy Industries", students in the department can become talents who are not only strong in English and Japanese, but can also easily handle various industries.
Dr. Ho, Yu-Tien of the department gives an example, by inviting Dr. Ing. Eric Koenig, American professor from Germany, to teach "Introduction to Semiconductor and Green Energy Industries" which allows students to get in touch with the pulse of the industry. Students in the department have excellent language skills and can easily get to grips with first-hand information. Moreover, by taking interdisciplinary courses in engineering, design, and other fields at Tatung University, they have more opportunities to immerse themselves in the STEM environment, giving them a unique advantage.
According to Professor Chao, Hsiu-Fen, the department also has a unique feature that others do not have - "on-site teaching." The department has long-term cooperation with nearby junior high and elementary schools. Students participate in teaching modules, from lesson planning, trial teaching, formal teaching to feedback and revision. Before the lesson, the teacher strictly reviews it, and after the lesson, the junior high and elementary school teachers provide feedback and assistance. "Teaching in the process of learning, learning in the process of teaching" allows students to enter the job market earlier than others.
In addition to professional courses, the department encourages students to step out of the campus and provides opportunities for international exchange and internships, making it the department with the largest number of outgoing exchange students in the university. The department has also signed an agreement with Yokote City, Japan. Every summer and winter vacation, the city exclusively provides Tatung students with internship opportunities and the chance to be tourism ambassadors, allowing them to apply what they have learned.
As the department chair Dr. Hsieh, Fuhui said, if life is super high-speed unlimited broadband internet, then "foreign language" is the tool that opens the door.
