Awesome College Major - Protecting the Earth and Making a Fortune
The disciplines of chemical engineering and biotechnology are aimed at improving human life and protecting our environment," explains Dr. Yuh-Jing Chiou of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. "By caring for the Earth, we can also bring wealth to businesses and individuals. This is where the particular value of our department lies."
The strength of the department lies in the development of chemical or biological products and processes that achieve energy savings, waste reduction, and recycling. Such expertise and talent are highly sought after in global industries, including emerging industries such as semiconductor processes, optoelectronic polymer materials, biotechnology, biomedical materials, food and medicine, and energy technology. Outstanding alumni, such as the Chairman of Sharp Japan, Cheng-Wu Tai and the Chairman & CEO of GTC Technology, Ping-Ti Wang, are prime examples.
Ping-Ti Wang founded GTC Technology, a multinational petrochemical professional technology company that was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Petrochemical Industry in 2019. Chemical and Biological talents would be in high demand in the job market. Some alumni received nine jobs offer immediately after completing their graduate studies, even before completing their military service, and were able to choose their preferred companies rather than being chosen by employers.
"Mastering professional foundations," "foreign language proficiency," "communication skills," and "engineering ethics" are the abilities that students in the department expect to achieve. The department has a rich resource of facilities including the Biotechnology Center, Energy Center, Chemical and Biological Engineering Maker Space. Dr. Chiu reminds students that "every effort and even hardship endured for their studies now is a process towards high-paying careers in the future.
